Picture Book - Brambly Hedge

Grace and I have had a delightful time reading these dear stories written by Jill Barklem. Each picture book, holds approximately twenty pages of quaintly detailed illustrations and text.
Today, we read "Autumn Story," which told a tale of Primrose, the mouse daughter of Lord and Lady Woodmouse, who wandered away and was lost in the wood. The story contained just enough drama to keep Gracie's attention, and yet didn't frighten her. What was neat to see was how Grace had to examine each illustration and talk about all the minute details.
This series is a lovely example of living literature. The language was full and rich, not dumbed down in the slightest. Gracie became curious what a "thistledown carpet," might look like. Fun, fun, fun! I feel these beautiful picture books are perfect as a read aloud for older preschoolers, kindergartners and possibly well into elementary. (I really enjoyed them and I'm an adult!)
